  • The elbow area has been cleansed and sterilized. A patch may be used to control bleeding during surgery.

2) Incisions

  • Around the elbow joint, small cuts are created, usually about 0.5 to 1 cm long. These cuts provide access to the arthroscope and other surgical instruments.

3) Insertion of the Arthroscope

  • An orthopedic surgeon places an arthroscope. It is a thin, flexible tube with a small camera, through one of the cuts. The camera conveys real-time photos of the inside of the elbow joint to a monitor. It allows the surgeon to assess the joint’s condition.

4) Evaluation

  • On the monitor, the surgeon analyzes the joint’s tissues and bones for any damage or abnormalities. It may be producing symptoms, such as discomfort or limited movement.

5) Treatment

  • The surgeon may use specialized tools put through the other cuts.
    • Remove any loose bone or cartilage fragments.
    • Repair torn or damaged ligaments.
    • To improve joint function, remove or smooth out any damaged cartilage.

6) Closure

  • The cuts are closed with sutures. And sterile dressings are used to keep the area clean and protected.

7) Recovery

  • As the patient awakens from anesthesia after surgery. Then medical staff observe them in a recovery room. They might be admitted overnight or released the same day, depending on how serious the procedure is.
  • This includes pain treatment, elevating the elbow to reduce swelling, and beginning physical therapy to recover flexibility and strength. The treatment approach promotes normal healing and restores function to the elbow joint.
