Cataract Surgery

  • Description
Description

Cataract is a rare problem for men and women. It is an eye disease, which can cause blurred vision or vision loss in individuals. This condition restricts them from performing normal activities and troubling them in reading books, novels, etc. If it left untreated, then it becomes dangerous for an individual while driving in activities. Its best surgical method is cataract surgery. It is a surgical procedure that involves the replacement of cloudy lenses with an artificial lens. This surgery requires a tiny probe or a laser device for the operation. It is mainly performed by an ophthalmologist and considered as an outpatient procedure for individuals. Its other name is lens replacement surgery.

Types of Cataract Surgery

This surgery is of two kinds. These are as follows:

  • Phacoemulsification: A doctor performs this surgery through a tiny probe after making a small incision at the front of an eye. This device transmits ultrasound waves which breaks the cloudy lens into smaller fragments. It is mainly essential for proper vision. This method is also known as small incision cataract surgery.
  • Extracapsular Surgery: In this procedure, a large incision can be made at the top of an eye to remove a cloudy lens in one piece. This type of surgery is not helpful for individuals since it does not provide quicker recovery as compared to phacoemulsification surgery.

Benefits of Cataract Surgery

The advantages of this treatment approach are as follows:

  • It is a safe and painless procedure for individuals.
  • This surgery minimizes eye strain and makes color vision clearer and sharper for them.
  • It lowers stress, anxiety, and depression for the enhancement of mental health.

Risks and Complications

The complications of this surgery are rare for individuals. These include the following:

  • Bleeding
  • Secondary Cataract
  • Retinal Detachment
  • Drooping eyelid
  • Vision loss
  • Glaucoma
  • Drooping eyelid
  • Infection
  • Swelling
  • Posterior capsular opacification
  • IOL displacement
  • Ongoing eye pain
  • Visual disturbances

Procedure of Cataract Surgery

Before Procedure

The following things that can be expected before the surgery are:

  • An ophthalmologist performs a pre-operative exam for the identification of cataract problems.
  • An ultrasound test is conducted for the measurement of an eye. This helps to identify a best intraocular lens for the surgery.
  • A patient should stop wearing contact lenses for a few days or weeks. He or she is also suggested to take fast for 12 hours.
  • The blood-thinning medication drugs are strictly prohibited before the surgical procedure. If an individual any medication drug, then he or she must consult with a relevant doctor.

During Procedure

The things that can be possible during the surgical procedure are as follows:

  • A healthcare professional provides a general or local anesthesia in the healthcare department.
  • The eye drops will be used to numb the patient’s eye so that he or she cannot view anything except rainbow lights.
  • A surgeon creates the small incisions in a cornea to view the cloudy lens easily.
  • A tiny probe device is inserted at the front of an eye, which delivers ultrasound waves to destroy the cloudy lens into smaller pieces.
  • After that, an ophthalmologist inserts an intraocular lens inside the cornea.
  • Once the lens gets placed at a specific position, a surgeon closes the incision with a self-sealing incision since there is no requirement of stitches for the eyes.

After Procedure

  • Some vital signs must be checked in the recovery room for 15 or 30 minutes. It is essential for a patient after the surgery. He or she can also schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider before going home.
  • A blurred vision occurs after the surgery. This problem is common and can be improved for a few days or weeks.
  • An individual is not suggested to rub their eyes, which might lead to serious complications after the treatment. He or she must use an eye drop or wear a protective shield on the eyes. These products are not only helpful for vision improvement but also provide protection for swelling, infection and other eye problems.
  • If an individual is suffering from the following problems, then he or she must contact a relevant doctor immediately. These are as follows:
    • Eyelid swelling
    • Watery eyes
    • Vision loss
    • Multiple spots in the eyes
    • Eye redness

Recovery Tips and Aftercare

A patient must follow certain tips to recover from this health issue. These are as follows:

  • Wear dark sunglasses for eye protection.
  • Avoid applying soaps and water near the eyes for the first few days.
  • Wash your hands while using eye drops.
  • Resume normal activities but limit strenuous activities.
