Endoscopy Treatment

  • Description
Description

An endoscopy treatment is a diagnostic procedure. It is performed by a surgeon with the help of flexible scope to know the inner condition of the body and organs. The test is done through a thin endoscopic tube to get the clear pictures and videos of the organs and other health concerns. Endoscopy allows surgeons to identify and see the inside health problems and also assists doctors to determine the suitable treatments to the patients.

The diagnose test involves equipment like a computer system, a flexible tube attached with a camera, and electricity connection. There are various types of endoscopy procedures that are recommended to the patients for different purposes. Additionally, endoscopy is a minimal invasive procedure that means it does not involve long and multiple incisions. The person can go home on the day after this medical procedure.

Who needs Endoscopy?

Healthcare provider generally recommended endoscopic procedure to the individuals to evaluate different medical problems these include:

  • Digestive tract bleeding issue
  • Polyps or Growths in the colon
  • Routine colon cancer screening
  • Chronic diarrhea and constipation
  • Stomach pain
  • Ulcers and gastritis
  • Ear issues
  • Reproductive system
  • Urinary tract

Types of Endoscopy

There are various types of endoscopic procedures, however, each works almost in a similar way. In the procedure, a surgeon gently puts a scope into the body through a small incision. This scope directs the doctors to access the parts of the body that is causing the health concern.

Apart from that, endoscopies are categorized on the basis of parts of the body that need to be examined. These are listed below:

  • Arthroscopy: This surgical procedure performed under the guidance of an orthopedic surgeon through making incisions around your joint to check the joints condition.
  • Bronchoscopy: The procedure involves diagnosis of the lungs under the eye of a pulmonologist. He/She inserts the bronchoscope into the nose or mouth to view the lungs condition.
  • Colonoscopy: In this procedure, a gastroenterologist will examine the colon through colonoscopy.
  • Cystoscopy: This involves the test of the bladder through the urethra under the guidance of a urologist.
  • Enteroscopy: In this test, a gastroenterologist checks the function of the small intestine.
  • Hysteroscopy: A gynecologist performed this test to check the condition inside the uterus.
  • Laparoscopy: This is also a surgical procedure that involves multiple surgeons to view the condition of the abdominal and pelvic part.
  • Laryngoscopy: Laryngoscopy is done to check the mouth and nostrils under the eye of an otolaryngologist.

Benefits of Endoscopy Treatment

The following are the benefits of endoscopy procedure for the patient:

  • Minimum incisions
  • Low risk of inflammation
  • No hospital stay
  • No muscle and tissue trauma
  • Less pain
  • Minimum blood loss
  • Assist in early treatment

Pre-Consultation For Endoscopy

  • A doctor first examines the patient’s physical condition and makes sure the patient is not  pregnant and has no UTI problem. He may also ask for medical history and prior operation details.
  • A patient must provide all medication and natural supplements details that he has been taking currently whether they are prescribed or over the counter drugs.
  • After that, the healthcare provider instructs the person not to take certain medications to avoid blood loss during the procedure.
  • As per the requirement of the test a patient is also asked not to drink alcohol and quit smoking one week before the procedure.
  • A doctor also suggests you to fast and avoid eating and drinking for 2 to 3 hours before endoscopic treatment.

Procedure of Endoscopy Surgery Treatment

The following are the endoscopic procedure and steps that are taken by the surgeon during the procedure:

  • The operating surgeon first administered mild anesthesia to the patient to make him calm and relaxed and to numb the specific part of the body where he was going to make a minor incision.
  • After this, the surgeon slowly inserts the flexible endoscope into the body until it reaches the specific organ. Meanwhile, a team of doctors and nurses carefully examine the organ’s related details on the computer screen and also make sure all vital organs are working properly.
  • After that, they’ll notice the abnormalities and remove unhealthy tissues and provide the required treatment to the patient.
  • The whole procedure runs for 30 minutes to 2 hours. However, time duration depends on which type of procedure you’re undergoing and on complications.
  • Once the endoscopy is done, the patient can go home on the same day, but when a doctor finds complications, then the person must stay in the hospital for 24 hours.

Recovery and Aftercare

After completion of the endoscopy, an individual might feel minor side effects including sore throat, dry mouth, bloating and gas. However, these are temporary; they will go in a few hours after taking the rest. If the person is experiencing discomfort or pain then doctors prescribe certain medicines and instruct them to take a healthy diet and proper rest for better recovery.
