Description

A medical test that is performed to evaluate or diagnose various conditions that are affecting your urinary function is known as urodynamic evaluation. Various conditions like bladder outlet obstruction, detrusor underactivity, urinary incontinence and overactive bladder may affect your urinary function and become the cause of multiple symptoms. 

Due to urinary dysfunction an individual experiences different symptoms, including frequent urge to urinate, discomfort, and feeling unable to empty the bladder, and many more. Hence, doctors recommend this test to evaluate the functioning of the bladder. The test successfully assists doctors to evaluate multiple urinary disorders and to provide effective treatment on time to the patients. 

The test is performed in a clinic or hospital under the consultation of an experienced gynecologist. And the test requires a 30 to 1 hour period however, it may vary depending on the complexity of the test and the patient’s condition. 

Reason To Undergo for Urodynamic Testing

  • Experiencing urinary incontinence

Types of Urodynamic Evaluation 

The test involves multiple evaluation, which are as follows:

  • Uroflowmetry: This test involves the evaluation of flow of urine in the females. 
  • Electromyography: It is measuring the function of the pelvic floor muscle and tissues. 
  • Pressure Flow Study: In this test doctors measure the pressure inside your bladder and the flow of the urine while urination.  
  • Cystometry: It measures the pressure inside the bladder as it is being filled with the urine. 
  • Postvoid Residual Measurement: In this test a healthcare provider measures the amount of pee left on your bladder after the urination. 
  • Video Urodynamic Test: It is a combination of multiple tests it evaluates urine flow in from the bladder and pressure in the bladder through x-rays examination.

Urodynamic evaluation is a safe and reliable test for females. Hence, women can unhesitatingly opt for the procedure under the consultation of a gynecologic doctor. According to doctors there are small changes of occurring urinary tract infection due to inserting a catheter inside the urethra. Catheter is used during the test for evaluation. However, women only experience little discomfort and dizziness after the procedure. Although it can manage with certain medications and lifestyle changes.

Urodynamic Evaluation Procedure

The procedure is done through following steps:

  • Firstly, a doctor will examine and analyze your overall health and wellbeing, and previous health conditions and medications. 
  • When the doctor finds you fit and suitable for the test then he/she proceeds for the test for evaluation of the bladder. 
  • A nurse will ask you to wear comfortable clothes and then lie down on the examination table. 
  • After that a healthcare provider inserts a catheter into your bladder and another inside your rectum. 
  • In the meantime, the catheter is linked to the computer for analyzing the pressure in your bladder and abdomen. 
  • During this procedure a doctor closely monitors your pelvic muscles activities. Here, a healthcare provider also sees the shape of your bladder to make sure it is not swollen.
  • During the test the doctor may ask you to cough to see the reaction of your bladder. 
  • Lastly, the doctor takes x-ray images of your bladder and withdraws the catheter  from your urethra and rectum.
