Vertigo Surgery

  • Description
Description

Vertigo is a condition that causes dizziness. The reasons for vertigo occurrence are inner ear disease, head injury, and some specific medications. Although it mostly develops due to inner ear problems. When it occurs, it feels like you are spinning or even the whole world is spinning, when it is not. However, vertigo can be managed through lifestyle changes, medications, and surgical treatments. The condition can affect both men and women. There are various surgical treatments for vertigo that are effective to cure the condition. Vertigo surgery aims to destroy abnormal vestibular system and stabilize the condition. In this surgery, a surgeon corrects the entire function to make a balance between the ear and brain of a person. The surgery is a beneficial option for those individuals who are suffering with vertigo.

What are the Causes of Vertigo?

The following are the causes of vertigo, however, these may vary according to the patient’s condition:

  • Overuse of certain drugs like antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and cardiovascular drugs.
  • Past head injury, brain disease, and prolonged bed rest.
  • Ear surgery or shingles around your ear.
  • Specific medical conditions such as otosclerosis, arrhythmia, diabetes, migraine headaches, ataxia, etc.

Types of Vertigo

  • Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV): It is a common type of vertigo that causes short episodes of dizziness due to certain head movements. In the meantime, sudden movements of the head cause the breaking of anatomical debris in the ears, causing confusion.
  • Labyrinthitis: This vertigo occurs due to ear infection. It takes place when your labyrinth gets inflamed. Labyrinth is an ear part that is responsible for hearing and sense of balance between ear and brain.
  • Vestibular Neuronitis: Vestibular, also called vestibular neuritis, occurs due to severe ear infection. Initially, it affects the vestibular nerve that is responsible for balance control. This type of vertigo causes moderate to severe earache, vomiting, and nausea.
  • Meniere’s Disease: This vertigo is a unique condition among the patients. It is considered as a chronic ear disease that leads to recurrent episodes of vertigo like hearing problem, and tinnitus. These episodes might last for a few minutes to 24 hours.

Symptoms of Vertigo

There are multiple symptoms of vertigo that a person may experience these including:

  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Balance Problem
  • Headaches
  • Motion sickness
  • Discomfort in the ear
  • Dizziness
  • Hearing problems
  • Tinnitus
  • Nystagmus

Diagnosis For Vertigo Surgery

Physical examination and assessment of vertigo symptoms can reveal the detailed information for diagnosing vertigo conditions. ENT doctors often recommend below tests mentioned to identify the condition and determine the suitable treatment, whether it is medication or surgery.

  • Romberg’s Test: In this test, a healthcare provider instructs the patient to stand with the closed eyes, feet together, and arms by the side. If the individual is feeling unsteady and unbalanced, it indicates that there is something wrong with the central nervous system. The purpose of this test is to assess the functioning of the CNS, which is responsible for ear-brain balance.
  • Fukuda-Unterberger’s Test: The test is determined to check the inner ear labyrinth that causes vertigo. Doctor tells the patient to march for a while with eyes closed. If the person rotates or leans towards one side, this indicates that something is wrong with labyrinth function.
  • Vestibular Test: This test involves a combination of tests performed to diagnose inner ear condition. In this process, a person is asked to wear goggles while moving their eyes to follow a target. The patient could be asked to move head and body after warm and cool water is dripped into the ear canal.
  • Head Impulse Test: This test is suggested to check the functioning of the inner ear balance. A patient is asked to move his head gently to each side while focusing on a fixed target.
  • Hearing Test: Hearing tests are conducted to check the person is experiencing ringing in the ear and hearing loss. These hearing tests involve various tests including audiometry, Videoonystagmography, and Electronystagmography.
  • Caloric Test: In this diagnosis, the doctor put warm or cool water into the ear for 30 seconds. If the resulting temperature change stimulates the balance organ and allows the specialist to check its functionality.

Vertigo Surgery Cost & Procedures

Vertigo treatment is estimated at 70,000 to 80,000 thousand. However it is not the final cost, the final cost of the treatment depends on various factors. These factors involve which type of treatment you are availing, whether it is medications or surgery. Overall treatment cost is analyzed through diagnose tests, medications, surgery, hospital stay, doctor’s expertise, and more.

The treatment for vertigo also depends on the underlying cause as well. To manage vertigo, there are several treatment options these including:

Medications

  • Antihistamines: These drugs are prescribed to the vertigo patients to eliminate symptoms and to reduce dizziness.
  • Anti-vertigo Medication: Medicines like meclizine or dimenhydrinate may be recommended by the doctors to get relief from the different symptoms of vertigo.

Therapies

  • Canalith repositioning manoeuvres (Epley manoeuvre): This is a therapeutic treatment which involves a series of body and head movement, performed under the eye of a healthcare provider to reposition displaced ear crystals inside the ear.
  • Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT): It is a physical therapy that is designed to improve balance between ear and brain and to reduce dizziness through exercises.

Vertigo Surgery

Surgery procedure is recommended in those cases where medications and therapeutic treatment fail. Other than that, ENT doctors may suggest surgery treatment in certain cases as well. The surgery treatment for vertigo may involve certain steps, which are as follows:

  • Vestibular Nerve Section: This procedure is done through making tiny incisions behind the ear and performed under mild anesthesia. After making the cuts or incisions, a surgeon detects the vestibular nerve and cuts it, which is becoming an obstruction between the ear and brain.
  • Labyrinthectomy: This procedure involves removing the entire inner ear balance system for reducing vertigo symptoms. However, it also causes complete hearing loss in the affected ear. The procedure requires hospital stay for a few days.
  • Endolymphatic Sac Decompression: In this procedure, a surgeon opens up the endolymphatic sac in the inner ear through making incisions to enhance fluid drainage and overcome the pressure.

Recovery

After any of these surgical procedures, a patient needs complete rest for a few days, because he/she may experience dizziness or nausea. It is also significant for the person to follow all the guidance given by the healthcare provider. And must avoid physical activities and certain medications or drugs.
