Peyronie disease is a condition in which plaque is formed under the penis. This causes a curve in the penis that causes painful erection which is a connective tissue disorder. Approx., 13% males are experiencing Peyronie disorder or PD. It is caused when a thick plaque gets deposited in the elastic membrane inside the penis. This membrane is called tunica albuginea which helps the penis to get erected.
However, the deposition of scar tissues causes deformity in the penis by making a curve or bend while erection. It may be caused due to injury or autoimmune disease. This bend causes pain while having sex and painful erection. This disorder is mostly experienced by those males who are between the ages of 40 to 70.
This blog is for those individuals who are looking for the best treatment options for Peryronie disease.
Best Treatment for Peyronie Disease
It treatment can be done on basis of following factors and these are as follows:-
Stages
There are two stages of PD and these are mentioned below:-
- Acute Phase – Scar tissue gets deposited and creates more curvature to the penis. It causes pain while erection and this phase remains for 5 to 7 months which lasts up to 18 months.
- Chronic Phase – When symptoms appear first time then after 12 to 18 months, this phase starts. There is no pain and any changes in the length and curve of the penis.
Diagnosis
Peyronie is diagnosed by a urologist by performing some examinations which are as follows:-
- Your medical and family is required.
- A doctor will check the presence of plaque in the penis by doing a physical examination. Its length is measured and you might be asked to take pictures of your erect the penis to determine its curve.
- Your penis will be checked through ultrasound and it is done by giving a shot to make your penis erect.
Treatment Options
There are some treatment options which may depend on the severity of the disorder. These are as follows:-
Medication
- It is a non-surgical treatment in which oral medicines are not effective to treat curvature of the penis. Then medicines are injected directly into plaques. In the acute phase these shots are given after numbing the site. There are some injections which are given in the doctor’s clinic.
- Verapamil – This injection helps to minimize pain and curve of the penis. It also treats high blood pressure.
- Interferon-alpha 2b – It is a protein which is made by white blood cells and this reduces the curve, pain and size of the plaque.
- Collagenase – It is an enzyme which helps to break down scar tissue and that manages curves and improves erectile function. It is quite effective treatment for males who have a curve more than 30 degrees.
Therapy
- In this penile traction therapy, a mechanical device is put on the penis. It is performed by stretching the penis by a device for a specific time to improve its curve, length and other changes. It may be worn for half an hour or 6 hours each day. It is also known as a vacuum pump which stretches the penis or bends it opposite to the curve.
Surgery
Peyronie can be treat with surgery and there are various types of operations:-
- Penile Implantation – It is an effective treatment for poor erection. This implantation is done when this Peyronie is not responsive for vardenafil, sildenafil and tadalafil medicines. A device is placed into the penis which helps to straighten the penis during an erection. If it is not effective then it is combined with other surgeries.
- Suturing – In this process, an urologist will extract a piece of elastic membrane from the side of the penis and opposite the plaque. It is also known as plication.
- Grafting – This surgery removes the plaque by replacing it with a patch of the skin. This patch is taken from another part of the body which can be skin or vein. It helps to restore the length of the penis and it also straightens it.
Note: Post-surgery may cause some risks, such as numbness in the penis, infection, shortening of the penis etc.
