Spine Surgery Treatment

  • Description
Description

A medical technique that treats disorders of the backbone and spinal cord is termed as spine surgery. When drugs and physical therapy have failed and there is no obvious sign of improvement, this operation may be recommended. Spine surgery is an excellent option to relieve the ongoing pain and return to daily activities.

When you consult with the surgeon, discuss the pros and cons of the medical procedure. It can help you make an informed decision about spine surgery. Knowing the facts is an important step on the road to recovery, as any surgery can be scary.

Types

More specifically, about 90 percent of all spine surgeries are represented by four common types of procedures.

1. Discectomy:

  • Surgeons usually remove herniated disc material or a bulging part of the spine that presses the nerves or spinal cord. This makes the back and legs painless and the nerves start to function properly again.

2. Laminectomy:

  • An incision is made on the spinal cord to remove the parts of bone or ligaments in the back. It makes sure the spinal cord is free from pressure and this lessens the pain.

3. Spinal fusion and decompression:

  • Most people opt for this surgery in the United States. Two or more vertebrae are joined here with bone grafts or implant mechanism. This stabilizes the spine. Mainly used to treat unstable spine or degenerative disc conditions.

4. Artificial disc replacement:

  • A disc that is battered is removed and an artificial disc is put in place so that the spine movement is brought back and relieved of the ensuing pain.

Who is Eligible for this Surgery?

The below mentioned factors make an individual fit for this surgery that include:

  • Symptoms are intense: When an individual is suffering from severe pain, weakness, or functional loss, then the healthcare expert may suggest this procedure.
  • Failure of non-surgical treatments: Treatments that include physical therapy or medications, and all of these are not showing any visible signs of improvement. In this scenario, spine surgery is advised.
  • Good health of the patient: The patients should be overall healthy and free from any visible medical condition that can hinder the recovery process.

Benefits

The benefits of spine surgery include:

  • Decrease in pain after the procedure as there is minimum damage to tissues and muscles.
  • Decrease in risk of infection.
  • Loss of blood is minimum while operating the spine.
  • Procedure is quick and the recovery time is also less.

Risks and Complications

Spine surgery is normally safe but it may lead to several complications. Some of which are as follows:

  • Infection
  • Tissue damage
  • Nerve damage
  • Loss of blood
  • Blood clot
  • Bone graft issues
  • Spinal fluid leakage

Spine Surgery Treatment Procedure

1) Getting Ready for the Procedure

A complete investigation of the patient that includes a medical history and diagnostic testing is carried out. This will assure the doctor that the patient is fit for surgery.

Some guidelines to be followed include:

  • Undergoing additional tests such as magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, and X-ray of your spine.
  • Quit smoking.
  • Stop the use of certain drugs that can harm your body or adversely affect the healing process.
  • Follow the instructions given for the food you can eat or drink you should take in before the surgery day.
  • Talk to any relative or friend who will be present with you for the procedure. He or she will be there to assist you from the hospital to your home.

2) During the Procedure

On the surgical day, the doctors team will use a general anesthetic drug to make you numb and relieve your body of the pain.

During the medical surgery your surgeon will:

  • Make a suitable cut in your skin to look into your spine.
  • A tube is inserted through the cut and you will be operated under microscopic visualization. Your surgeon may also insert an endoscope to see the operating region.
  • Use of tiny surgical tools that will be required to complete the surgery through the endoscope. These tools may help to remove worn out tissues or to insert screws and rods to make the spine stable.
  • Remove retractors and devices in order for your muscles and tissue to return to their original position.
  • Once the medical team completes the procedure, they close the incisions and move the patient to the recovery room.

3) After the Procedure

You will be in recovery, till the time you regain full consciousness. You will frequently receive postoperative care instructions, including dietary and exercise limitations, before being released from the hospital the same or next day. The medical team plans follow-up appointments to track recuperation.

Recovery

The recovery time for spine surgery varies depending on the type of surgery, the patient’s condition, and his or her age. In general it is a slow and gradual process. Recovery can take weeks to months. Your surgeon will provide you with the most accurate time estimate for your situation.
