Elbow Arthroscopy surgery is a minimally invasive procedure called elbow arthroscopy which is used to treat elbow issues. This approach is used or opted by the surgeons to treat a variety of elbow related concerns. These include inflammation, loose fragments, cartilage damage, and ligament tears. All these are the common problems that are easily identified by the doctors. In this condition, the surgeons make small cuts around the elbow for viewing inside the elbow joint. They insert a tiny camera as well to know or address the exact problems with the help of an arthroscope.

Specialized tools are used to remove or repair damaged tissue. It causes less harm to surrounding soft tissues and allows for a faster recovery. Recovery might take between six to twelve weeks, and patients can return to their home the same day. Since elbow arthroscopy causes less scarring, less pain after surgery, and a quicker recovery, it is commonly preferred over open surgery.

Procedure of Elbow Arthroscopy Surgery

Preparation

  • The patient receives either general or regional anesthesia drugs to keep them asleep and pain-free. And this drug also helps to numb the elbow area.
  • The elbow area has been cleansed and sterilized. A patch may be used to control bleeding during surgery.

Incisions

Around the elbow joint, small cuts are created, usually about 0.5 to 1 cm long. These cuts provide access to the arthroscope and other surgical instruments.

Insertion of the Arthroscope

An orthopedic surgeon places an arthroscope. It is a thin, flexible tube with a small camera, through one of the cuts. The camera conveys real-time photos of the inside of the elbow joint to a monitor. It allows the surgeon to assess the joint’s condition.

Evaluation

On the monitor, the surgeon analyzes the joint’s tissues and bones for any damage or abnormalities. It may be producing symptoms, such as discomfort or limited movement.

Treatment

  • The surgeon may use specialized tools put through the other cuts.
    • Remove any loose bone or cartilage fragments.
    • Repair torn or damaged ligaments.
    • To improve joint function, remove or smooth out any damaged cartilage.

Closure

The cuts are closed with sutures. And sterile dressings are used to keep the area clean and protected.

Recovery

  • As the patient awakens from anesthesia after surgery. Then medical staff observe them in a recovery room. They might be admitted overnight or released the same day, depending on how serious the procedure is.
  • This includes pain treatment, elevating the elbow to reduce swelling, and beginning physical therapy to recover flexibility and strength. The treatment approach promotes normal healing and restores function to the elbow joint.
