The medical specialties of obstetrics and gynecology focus on the reproductive health of females. Despite their occasional integration the two fields of study are highly dissimilar. Brief Overview of Obstetrics and Gynecology

1. Gynecology

Gynecology is the study of female overall health. In-depth knowledge of the female reproductive system and the needs of women throughout their lives are required. In addition to the uterus, ovaries, Fallopian tubes and vagina these medical specialists can diagnose these problems. They also offer treatments to maintain the health of women’s breasts.

2. Obstetrics

The chief concern of medical specialty is the care of ladies before, during and after childbirth. It includes any medical aid necessary to safeguard the health of the mother and the fetus during pregnancy. And also the care needed for general well-being. Additionally, postpartum care is covered. It is common for an obstetrician to support and monitor a mother during childbirth.

Education & Training

These two categories of healthcare providers work closely. Under the OB/GYN label, these physicians may occasionally hold qualifications in both courses. These professionals go to medical school to become pediatrics or internal medicine.

Following medical school graduation in OB/GYNs go on to pursue:

  • Candidates should complete their Bachelor’s degree.
  • After that four years of medical school training.
  • And finally, a test to earn their specialty certification.

  • Both of these concentrate on women’s health requirements.
  • Physicians pursuing training to become obstetricians or gynecologists typically collaborate closely during their training.
  • This makes it easier for them to suggest treatment from a professional in the other field.
  • Both of them are well-versed in the health concerns and bodily systems of women.
  • Both physicians deal with various conditions, which require similar diagnostic and treatment approaches.
  • Both specialties emphasize preventive care to prevent and detect reproductive health issues.
  • Both OB/GYNs are trained in surgical procedures.

What Generally Gynecologist and Obstetricians Do?

A gynecologist may diagnose and treat issues, such as:

  • Cancers of the reproductive system
  • Prolapse of pelvic organs
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Uterine fibroid
  • Endometriosis
  • Vaginal infections
  • Conditions that cause pain during sex
  • Cancer of the reproductive system

Both OB-GYN may be trained in major or minor surgery for both inpatient and outpatient processes. Examples of these procedures include:

  • Myomectomy
  • Tubal ligation 

They also conduct regular preventive tests and screenings, such as:

  • Pelvic exams

Process of Gynecology and Obstetrics

The individual ailment being addressed determines the therapy methods used in obstetrics and gynecology. Examples of typical treatment methods include the following:

1) Medications

Treatment for these state can be cured with a number of drugs, such as 

  • Antibiotic medicines for various type of infections.
  • Endocrine therapy for birth control.
  • Pain relievers for cramps.

2) Surgery

Common gynecological activity, such as removal of the ovaries, uterus, fibroid etc. C-sections for delivery or surgery to correct certain birth-defect disease are included in the obstetric surgeries

3) Assisted Reproductive Technology

ART refers to various activities used to help women conceive, such as IVF and IUI.

4) Counseling

Both of these may provide counseling for a variety of reasons like infertility, pregnancy complications etc.

5) Preventive care

OB-GYN also offer preventive care, such as 

  • Pap smears for cervical tumor screening
  • Screening for breast cancer 
  • Pregnant females and their babies should be monitored properly under prenatal care.
