Thyroid Biopsy Treatment

  • Description
Description

The thyroid is an important gland of the neck that produces certain hormones that regulate various functions. The main working of the thyroid gland is to contribute to the entire body and neck functioning, including digestion, mood, heart rate, breathing, and metabolism. When the hormone gets affected by iodine deficiency, it causes certain thyroid problems like thyroid nodules, obesity, etc. Hence, a healthcare provider recommended a thyroid biopsy to check the consequences.

A thyroid biopsy is a fine needle aspiration procedure that aims to remove small tissues from your thyroid gland. Once the process is done the collected cells and tissues are sent to the pathology lab for identifying the health concerns. Although the entire process is less invasive than open surgeries and biopsies.

Types of Thyroid Biopsy

Thyroid patients always get fine needle aspiration biopsy, however, there could involve other ones as well, which are as follows:

  • Fine Needle Aspiration FNA Biopsy: During this test, a person awake throughout the process and may feel little pinches. A healthcare expert uses a small needle along with ultrasound imaging to collect the sample from your neck. A doctor could repeat it for a few times to get the sample from different parts of the nodule. He can take samples from lymph nodes near the thyroid gland as well. The procedure takes about 30 to 60 minutes for the completion of the test.
  • Core Needle Biopsy: This procedure is similar to FAN however, it involves bigger needles. When a doctor fails to collect the clear samples from a FNA biopsy to check the consequences, then this procedure is opted by the surgeon as a backup approach or plan.
  • Surgical Biopsy: Doctors rarely approach this surgical biopsy because it involves medications and longer recovery. The surgery is performed through making incisions in the neck and often removing the node; it may also involve removing the half thyroid. It is an entire surgical procedure, hence a patient also needs to go under observation for a few hours once the procedure is done.

Side Effects of Thyroid Biopsy

After a thyroid biopsy procedure, having complications are rare however, in some cases, it can pose side effects. These include:

  • Bleeding
  • Pain
  • Soreness
  • Infection
  • Discomfort
  • Cyst Formation
  • Difficulty while speaking

Diagnosis for Thyroid Biopsy

For assessing a lump and nodule in the neck, a doctor recommends different tests to check the possibility of cancer and functioning of thyroid gland. These diagnostics include:

  • Physical Examination: A healthcare provider asks you to swallow just to examine your thyroid because a nodule in your thyroid gland will commonly move up and down while swallowing.
  • Thyroid Function Test: It is determined to check the level of thyroid stimulating hormone TSH. This hormone is produced by the thyroid gland, which can indicate consequences present in your thyroid gland.
  • Ultrasound: Through ultrasound image testing a doctor gets a clear idea of the shape and function of thyroid gland. This test helps doctors to identify the cause and provide them information to prescribe medicines and determine best treatments.
  • Thyroid Scan: It is usually approached by the doctors to analyse thyroid nodules. In this procedure, a healthcare provider injected radioactive iodine into your vein in the arm, then with the help of a specific camera, they produced an image of your thyroid gland on a computer screen to detect the actual problem.

How to Prepare Yourself Before the Test?

Before going for the test, inform your doctor about your pregnancy medicines, allergies, and other health concerns. Also, get him the details of your prescribed and over-the-counter drugs that you are taking currently.

A healthcare provider may recommend that you not to take medications such as Aspirin, Clopidogrel, Ibuprofen, Warfarin, etc, one week before the biopsy.

Thyroid Biopsy Procedure & Its Cost

Thyroid biopsy cost may depend on different factors like geographical location of the hospital, popularity of the hospital, doctors’ expertise, and many more. However, it does not cost much, its range, approximately 4,000 to 5,000 INR.  Although the procedure is less invasive, it does not require much time for recovery. The following are the essential steps taken by the healthcare provider during the biopsy procedure.

  • A nurse or a doctor administered mild anesthesia to numb your neck.
  • Then start applying a specific gel to perform an ultrasound test on the neck.
  • Once the doctor detects, clear images of thyroid nodules in your neck.
  • They gently insert a long, thin needle through your skin and into the thyroid nodule.
  • After that, a doctor carefully draws out sample tissues from your neck.
  • Once the sample is collected, nurses put the bandage over the injected site.
  • After that, doctors give you some instructions to follow for a week just to recover soon.
  • The collected samples are sent to the lab to identify the cause.
