Cryosurgery Treatment

  • Description
Description

Skin problems are rare that affect people at any age. These conditions mainly occur when the tissue gets abnormal and can cause skin cancer in men and women. They become harmful and can cause ulcers, red patches etc. The treatment of these problems are essential for male and female individuals.

Its best effective approach is cryosurgery treatment. It is a surgical procedure, which is mainly used to destroy or freeze abnormal tissues from the skin. This surgery can be performed through a cotton swab or a cryoprobe device. It is an outpatient procedure and can be operated by a dermatologist, interventional radiologist and specialist GP. This surgery is also suggested for patients with cancer problems. Its other name is cryotherapy or cryoablation.

Types of Cryotherapy

This surgery is of two kinds. These are as follows:

  • Internal Cryotherapy: A doctor needs a cryoprobe device and some imaging tests for this surgery. It is mainly suggested for people suffering from any type of cancer.
  • External Cryotherapy: It can be performed through a cotton swab or a spray device. This surgery is applicable for the management of skin problems in patients.

Benefits

This surgery has several advantages. These include the following:

  • It is a safe and effective procedure, which usually results in less scarring than other traditional approaches.
  • This approach does not require large incisions and provides quicker recovery in male and female patients.
  • It destroys or eliminates abnormal tissues and improves an individual’s quality of life.

Risks and Complications

The complications of this surgery are as follows:

  • Bleeding and Infection
  • Skin necrosis
  • Pigmentary problems or loss of skin pigmentation
  • Bone damage
  • Skin discoloration
  • Damage in nerve or nearby blood vessels
  • Skin blisters
  • Scarring
  • Tissue defects
  • Liver damage

Procedure

Before Procedure

The things that can be expected before the surgery are as follows:

  • An individual visits a healthcare center and suggested to fill an application form before the surgical procedure
  • A healthcare provider reviews the medical history and performs a physical exam to check the signs and symptoms associated with skin and cancer problems.
  • A blood test will be conducted to check for blood clotting and proper function of a kidney.
  • Some imaging tests are performed to identify the location of the tumor. This helps a doctor to insert a cryoprobe device easily.
  • A biopsy is performed in the healthcare department to check whether cryosurgery is an appropriate treatment or not.

An individual must follow certain instructions, before the surgical procedure. These include the following:

  • Avoid taking medicines like aspirin, ibuprofen etc.
  • Do not eat or drink for a few hours.
  • Stop smoking and alcohol.
  • Avoid wearing tight clothes.
  • Remove jewelry and other essential items.

During Procedure

The following things can happen in the medical center. These are as follows:

  • A general or local anesthesia will be provided to a patient in the healthcare department. He or she may also receive sedative medicine for muscle relaxation.
  • A healthcare provider uses a spray device or a cotton swab to apply an extreme cold on the targeted abnormal cells. This process is recommended for external cryosurgery.
  • A surgeon creates a small incision in the skin and inserts a cryoprobe device to freeze the abnormal tissue. It is essential for internal cryosurgery.
  • An incision is closed with surgical staples or stitches. A bandage may also be applied to protect the incision from infection.

After Procedure

A patient will spend a few days in a healthcare department and then go home after the surgery. After that, he or she must follow some rules and regulations. These include the following:

  • Strenuous activities and lifting heavy objects should be prohibited for a few weeks.
  • An incisional area must be clean and dry after the surgical procedure.
  • A pain relief medication drug will be taken with a small sip of water.
  • An individual should follow a proper nutrition diet and drink plenty of water for overall health.

A person must contact a relevant doctor immediately, when he or she suffers from the following health problems. These are as follows:

  • Fever or chills
  • Redness, dryness or itching in skin
