Description

Men and women who suffer from pleural effusion are mainly suggested for thoracentesis surgery. It develops when there is an excess amount of fluid in the lungs. This problem cannot be cured easily. It can cause rapid breathing, chest pain, and other problems, which can become harmful for a patient’s health. Its treatment is mainly essential, which can be possible through a thoracocentesis surgery. It is a medical procedure in which the extra fluids are eliminated from the lungs. This surgery is performed through a thin needle or catheter. It is similar to paracentesis surgery. Its other name is pleural tap or needle thoracostomy.

What Conditions can be treated with this Surgery?

  • Therapeutic Thoracentesis: It is usually performed for the elimination of a fluid in excess amount. This surgery is recommended for the management of empyema or hemothorax.

Benefits of Thoracentesis Surgery

The advantages of this medical procedure are as follows:

  • It provides relief from chest and lung pressures to minimize breathing problems in patients.
  • This surgery is minimally invasive in which the infection and pleural effusion symptoms can be diagnosed easily.
  • It doesn’t require large incisions and lower the risk of complications in individuals.
  • It treats pneumonia, tuberculosis, etc, in patients to improve their quality of life.

Risks and Complications

The complications of this surgical procedure are as follows:

  • Bleeding and Infection
  • Pulmonary edema
  • Liver or spleen injury
  • Pneumothorax or collapsed lung

Procedure of Thoracentesis Surgery

The following things can be expected before the surgical procedure:

  • A consent form must be signed to give permission to a patient for surgery. Before signing, read the form carefully. A patient may ask questions to a healthcare provider if he or she has any kind of issues related to form.
  • Some diagnostic tests will be conducted to check the amount of fluid in the lungs.
  • A healthcare provider uses a small device for the measurement of blood oxygen level.
  • The blood-thinning medication drugs should be prohibited for patients, but they are suggested to take pain medicine before the surgical procedure.
  • Some harmful things, such as illegal drugs, cigarettes, alcohol, etc, must be stopped before the surgery.

During Procedure

The steps that can be performed during the surgery are as follows:

  • The healthcare provider connects the devices with a patient’s body to monitor the heart rate, blood pressure and breathing.
  • A nasal tube is connected with a nose to deliver oxygen to patients so that they are able to breathe easily during the surgical procedure.
  • A surgeon checks the pleural area and places a thin and specific needle into the pleural space. After that, he or she uses an antiseptic solution to clean the skin and numbs the area from a local anesthetic medicine.
  • The small incision will be created to insert another needle between the ribs. It is essential for the removal of fluid. A portable ultrasound device is used to guide the needle.
  • A surgeon will also use a catheter for the surgery. It will be attached with a chest for one or two days.
  • The needle will be taken out after the removal of a large amount of fluid from the lungs.
  • The area will be protected through a bandage or dressing.
  • A surgeon sends the fluid into the lab to check the sign of infection or other pleural effusion symptoms.
  • A procedure named chest X-ray will be conducted for lung identification. It can be possible after the surgical procedure.

After Procedure

  • A healthcare provider performs another chest X-ray procedure and monitors the vital signs in the recovery room. After that, a patient can go home after the surgery. He or she is suggested to resume their normal activities or work.
  • Strenuous activities must be prohibited for a certain period. If an individual wants to maintain their overall health, then he or she must eat a proper diet and drink plenty of water.
  • A person should call the doctor immediately, when suffering from the following problems:
    • Fever above 100 degrees Celsius
    • Redness or swelling at the needle site
    • Breathing problems
    • Chest pain
