Gastric Bypass Surgery

  • Description
Description

Gastric bypass surgery makes some physical changes in your stomach and intestine. It is helpful in treating excess body weight. It reduces the size of these organs, and then both parts are reconnected. When the body mass index is more than 40, then this operation is done. This modification changes the way we absorb and digest food. This small stomach makes you feel full by eating less food. It helps in reducing weight by restricting the amount of food; fewer calories are absorbed, and suppress appetite. It is also called RYGB surgery.

Types of Gastric Bypass Surgery

It has the following types:

  • Restriction Process: The size of the stomach is decreased by dividing the stomach into two parts. It is done without affecting the digestive process. This process is also called gastric stapling operation, which reduces the amount of consumed food.
  • Malabsorption Process: It restricts the absorption of food that we eat, and this helps to make you feel full. It also limits the digestion and absorption of nutrients by diverting the flow of bile and enzymes from food.
  • Combination Process: It is the most effective and safest way to reduce weight through this surgery. This combined surgery is helpful in losing weight than other procedures.

Procedure of Gastric Bypass Surgery

This operation makes some modifications to your digestive system. This makes you consume and absorb fewer amounts of food and calories. Its procedure is completed in the following steps:

  • Before the Procedure: You should have to share your medical history with your surgeon. You will ask to come on an empty stomach, quit smoking, and follow a specific diet.
  • During the Procedure:
    • Anesthesia is given to the patient through injection.
    • First step starts with dividing your stomach into smaller portions, which look like a pouch. This is the size of an egg, and its larger part is bypassed, which is no longer able to store or digest food.
    • The small intestine is also divided and then connects to this new stomach pouch. This connection allows food to pass. A large portion of the stomach is bypassed by making connections with the small bowel segment. This new connection looks like a Y shape.
    • The stomach acids and digestive enzymes from the first portion of the intestine and the bypassed stomach are mixed with eaten food.
  • After the Procedure: After completing the process, your doctor may ask to consider the following things. You will ask to stop taking aspirin before the procedure.
