When other weight reducing methods are not effective then this surgery is done. It is a weight loss surgery which is done to treat excess body fat and obesity-related conditions. It is also considered as stomach reduction surgery in which some changes are made in your digestive system. Like, size of the stomach, gut hormones, reduced capability of nutrient absorption or maybe the combination of these.

Procedure of Bariatric Surgery

There are two types of procedure which will be explained in detailed:-

1) Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery

It is a very common surgery which makes a new connection to the tract of your digestive system. It is a non-reversible process which helps to reduce nutrients absorption. The procedure creates a new link between a small part of your stomach and the small intestine. Due to its new small size it makes you feel full and absorbs less nutrients. It has two surgical approaches which includes open and laparoscopic technique.

Procedure

  • A doctor gives general anesthesia to the patient to numb the site.
  • The size of the cut is made depending on its type, like open or laparoscopic.
  • Reduces the size of the upper part of the stomach to a small pouch.
  • Then this new stomach part gets linked with the part of the small intestine. It becomes Y-shaped

Risks

  • Bleeding.
  • Infection.
  • Bowel Blockage.
  • Narrowed diameter of the new stomach.

  • Pushing the stomach to the diaphragm may cause hiatal hernia.

2) Sleeve Gastrectomy

It is a laparoscopic procedure in which the stomach of an individual is divided. Most of its part is removed by a surgical process. This change in the stomach makes huge curviness which looks like a banana shape. Its open ends are stitched with surgical sutures or sutures. It is quite common and more effective in reducing weight than any other process. The risk of ulcer is very low. After reducing the size of the stomach, some changes occur in gut hormones which contribute to losing weight.

a) Procedure

  • A general anesthesia is given to an individual.
  • The surgeon makes 5 minor cuts in your abdomen.
  • A long and thin tube with an attached camera is used throughout the entire process.
  • Instruments are used to extract most of part of the stomach.
  • The whole process is seen with the help of a camera on the screen.
  • Then after taking out part of the stomach, the rest of its parts look like a banana.
  • Its opening ends are closed using stitches.

b) Advantages

  • It alters the composition of microorganisms which live in our digestive tract.
  • Affects the conversion process of food and absorption of nutrients.

c) Risks

  • Slow and poor healing process.
  • Low level of nutrients.
  • Risk of internal hernia.
  • Additional surgery may be required.
  • Saggy skin due to too much weight loss.
  • Trouble in getting enough amounts of protein, calcium and iron.
