Salivary gland cancer is a rare disease which is form in the salivary gland. Most of the time, it presents as a painless lump or swelling in the head and neck. The salivary gland make saliva that helps in digestion, supports healthy teeth, and keeps your mouth damp. The mouth and throat contain these glands, which include the parotid, submandibular, and sublingual glands, as well as minor glands. The main cause of this cancer is not defined anywhere, but in most cases, smoking, alcohol, older age, HPV, etc found as a reason.

Who is Eligible for Salivary Gland Cancer Treatment?

  • Stage and Grade: Initial stage or low grade’s patients are often treated with only surgery. However, high grade or last stage’s patients need major surgeries or the combination of treatments.
  • Tumor’s Area: The treatment depends on the patient’s tumor location, major glands are treated easily with the operation or surgery, however, minor glands are difficult to manage.
  • Health and Age: Overall health and age are crucial in surgery because these factors dictate a patient's ability to endure anesthesia, resist infection, and undergo post-surgical operations.

Common Symptoms of Salivary Gland Cancer

  • Swelling: A painless mass in front of the ear, under the chin, in the cheek, or on the floor of the mouth.
  • Facial Changes: Due to nerve damage or irritation, facial structure may be changed. The problems that you face are weakness, tingling, or paralysis.
  • Pain: Patients may experience severe pain in the face, neck, jaw, or mouth that gets worse while eating.
  • Ear Drainage: Fluid draining from the ear.
  • Swallowing: Pain during the swallow of anything, either foods or liquids.
  • Other Issues: Face difficulties in smiling, moving the face, and feel like that something stuck in the throat.

Procedure of Salivary Gland Cancer Treatment

Best treatment on time and follow-ups or post surgery care are crucial in every medical problem. So, check out the process for salivary gland cancer treatment from before to after surgery.

Pre-Treatment Evaluation and Diagnostics

Diagnosis and physical tests are essential before going to surgery. The tests include:

  • Physical Tests
  • MRI, CT Scan, and PET Scan
  • Fine-Needle Aspiration (FNA)
  • Biopsy
  • Ultrasound

Types of Salivary Gland Cancer Treatment

Doctors use either a combination of treatments or prefer only one. The options are given below:

  • Surgery: The most of the common treatment for any serious medical problem is surgery. To stop the cancer from spreading in body, the surgeon removes the tumor and surrounding tissue. They will also remove the lymph nodes of the neck.
  • Radiation Therapy: Radiation therapy uses high energy beams, such as X-rays, to either kill or stop the growth of cancer cells. Generally, it is used after surgery to kill any cancer cells that are still in the body.
  • Chemotherapy: It is used in the form of medications to destroy cancer cells. Although it is not the first choice of doctor for treating cancer. Chemotherapy is used when cancer spread to an advanced level.
  • Targeted Therapy: This is a type of personalized drug that targets particular characteristics, alterations, mutations, or chemicals in cancer cells to treat the disease.

Recovery and Care

Surgery is not a big problem, the problem is recovery and care after surgery. Healing is one of the crucial phases for a patient. So, after obtaining salivary gland cancer treatment, follow the instruction that suggest by the surgeon, and don’t skip any visits. Do regular therapy and facial exercises, may attend the speech or swallow therapy. After this treatment, oral health will be an issue, so consult with a dentist and tell them about your medical history. Maintain a healthy diet and avoid foods that the doctor advises against.
